BOSTON - The MBTA has completed infrastructure improvements along the Red Line Ashmont Branch and Mattapan Line.

During service suspension, crews performed testing and commissioning work on the Line’s new digital signal system. This digital infrastructure replaces the previous analog signal system. Work on this new digital system is 70% complete with a slated completion date toward the end of 2026. Additionally, they performed track and tamping work between Broadway and Ashmont on the Red Line and between Ashmont and Mattapan on the Mattapan Line, and they made upgrades to major power infrastructure. These upgrades will help to make the line more resilient and modern.

Between Savin Hill and Fields Corner, crews also performed track and tamping work. As a result of this work, a speed restriction that was once in place in the area since August 2025 has since been removed. The Codman Yard Facility power substation, which powers the Mattapan Line, also received upgrades.

During service suspension, crews were able to work unimpeded for less than five days. Some of the other upgrades and work that took place included: completing inspections at bridges and retaining walls at various locations; repairing ramps for better accessibility; and installing a conduit over the Adams Street Bridge near Milton Station. This conduit protects cables from potential damage.

“I’m proud of the MBTA for completing another major step in modernizing the Red Line, which leads to improved reliability for all of our riders. . . I want to thank our crews for their work and to our riders for their patience while these valuable signal, track, and power upgrades were compelted,” said Interim Secretary of Transportation and MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng.
