Canadian National announces more capex: C$445 million in Alberta and C$15 million in New Brunswick

Canadian National has announced more capital spending on the roadway.

After announcing planned capex in Ontario and Manitoba last week, CN announced this week that capex is planned for its lines in New Brunswick and Calgary.

As noted in CN’s announcement last week, this is part of a C$3 billion capex effort by CN on its network.

Alberta

“Alberta has the best rail infrastructure in Canada and this investment by CN will ensure that we continue to be at the forefront of transporting goods to markets across the continent. Their investment is a strong vote of confidence in the future of Alberta’s economy.”

Maintenance program highlights include:

  • Replacing 64 miles of rail;
  • Installing approximately 182,000 new railroad ties;
  • Rebuilding 38 road crossing surfaces; and
  • Maintenance work on bridges, culverts, signal systems, and other track infrastructure

Alberta in numbers:

  • Capital investments: More than $1.3 billion in the last five years
  • Employees: approximately 3,200
  • Railroad route miles operated: 2,521
  • Community partnerships: $763,000 in 2020
  • Local spending: $619 million in 2020
  • Cash taxes paid: $111 million in 2020

New Brunswick

Maintenance program highlights include:

  • Replacing 5 miles of rail;
  • Installing approximately 7,000 new railroad ties;
  • Rebuilding 19 road crossing surfaces; and
  • Maintenance work on bridges, culverts, signal systems, and other track infrastructure

New Brunswick in numbers:

  • Capital investments: Approximately $135 million in the last five years
  • Employees: approximately 310
  • Railroad route miles operated: 569
  • Community partnerships: $230,000 in 2020
  • Local spending: $54 million in 2020
  • Cash taxes paid: $2.3 million in 2020
