R. J. Corman Completes Rail Scale Rehab in Illinois

ROBINSON, Ill. - R. J. Corman announced it finished rail scale rehabilitation for Rain Carbon Inc in Illinois.
According to the release from R. J. Corman, its Emergency Services Division in St. Louis finished a rail scale rehabilitation project located at Rain Carbon Inc.’s carbon black facility last October. As part of the project, crews worked to address “significant structural deterioration and restored the accuracy and reliability of the in-motion scale, ensuring compliance and operational efficiency for years to come.”
Over time, the rail scale had sagging approaches, rusted steel plates, and old anchor bolts. To address the issues, R. J. Corman employed a special team to complete the work over the course of a one-week shutdown. Crews removed rail from the 75-foot approaches and cut off an estimated 300 failed bolts. Additionally, they demolished the old base plates. New holes were drilled, and bolts were installed after cleaning and prepping each foundation. R. J. Corman positioned new rail plates and adding more routing beneath base plates for structural stability.
To complete this work efficiently, R. J. Corman says it worked in “close coordination with Rain Carbon and subcontractors Mac Contracting and Great River Track.” They had to contend with the challenge of drilling through reinforced concrete without causing damage to the foundation. The project was completed on schedule despite its challenges, and the new infrastructure is expected to extend the service life by 10 to 15 years. AREMA Committee 34 standards were adhered to throughout the project.
