Rail service will return to Lac-Mégantic via a temporary link to be built by the end of the year, according to the province's Premier Pauline Marois.

Marois made the announcement while outlining a CA$16.2 million (US$15.3 million) plan to rebuild the town’s core and create a new commercial center. The cost of the plan is included in a CA$60 million ($56.9 million) recovery fund that was previously announced.

The plan will create a new shopping center, construct a permanent bridge over the Chaudière River and create a memorial for the victims.

The temporary rail link will be built from the Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railway’s main line to the town’s industrial park, which employs more than 10 percent of the town’s 6,000 residents.

According to Marois, Quebec will continue to study options to establish a permanent rail link.
