MOUNT VERNON, Ind. –– Indiana state and local officials this week opened what they term a "Mega Modal" opportunity at the Ports of Indiana – Mount Vernon with the addition of the Mount Vernon Railroad.

The Ports of Indiana – Mount Vernon is Indiana’s largest port, and OmniTRAX is the nation’s largest privately-held, family-owned rail transportation company.

The Ports of Indiana owns the Mount Vernon Railroad, and OmniTRAX operates it. The railroad will serve as the switching carrier for the port, which is home to a 500-acre megasite targeted for large-scale multimodal development, and handles about 25,000 rail cars each year. The port is investing approximately $25 million to support heavy industrial growth, including steel, automotive, plastics, and energy, and seeks to attract large multimodal industries that rely on both rail and barge transportation.

This site has access to four Class I railroads and sits in the largest inland port district in the U.S. by tonnage. Moreover, OmniTRAX’s economic development resources, which are part of the Broe Group, owners of OmniTRAX. The Broe Group is a private, multi-billion-dollar infrastructure company with diversified holdings in 41 North American states and provinces.
