SAN JOSE, Calif. –– In order to successfully complete repairs to the Guadalupe River Bridge, Caltrain has suspended select weekend service along the line from July - September.

“This weekend, July 11-12, Caltrain is suspending train travel between Tamien and San Jose Diridon stations to complete necessary repairs to the Guadalupe River Bridge.

“Additional closures are planned for the weekends of July 25-26, Aug. 8-9 and 22-23, and Sept. 19-20. Caltrain’s weekday service will be unaffected by construction and Caltrain riders not traveling to Tamien Station should not be affected by construction.

“The Guadalupe Bridge Replacement Project is a critical safety project that will complete the bridge deck and trackwork, replacing the original bridge built in 1935. Additionally, the project will protect the creek from erosion, allowing for a healthy and flourishing aquatic habitat. Construction takes place primarily during daylight hours.

“Work in this area is complex, due to the need to protect the environment of the Guadalupe River. As such, Caltrain has worked with many regulatory agencies, including the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, California State Water Resources Control Board, Army Corps of Engineers and the Santa Clara Valley Water District, to approve the work plan. The total project cost is approximately $171 million.

“Caltrain successfully installed bridge foundations and a 110-foot steel girder bridge span section during the last ‘dry’ season and is expected to finish the bridge construction by this October.

“In addition to Caltrain, the Guadalupe Bridge supports Union Pacific, Amtrak and the Altamont Commuter Express rail service.”
