BARSTOW, Calif. - BNSF's North First Avenue Bridge Project received the Engineering News-Record's Southern California Best Projects Award of Merit.
The award was in the Highway/Bridge category, according to the report. The project was coordinated by San Bernardino County Transportation Authority, BNSF, and the city. The old structure, measuring 1,179-foot-long truss bridge, dated back to the 1930s. BNSF says the structure spanned 11 tracks and includes three main lines of BNSF’s Southern Transcontinental. The new structure consists of concrete and steel “and provides wider pedestrian walkways.” The bridge also has bike-friendly shoulders and improved access.
The project was submitted by Skanska USA Civil West, according to ENRWest. Projects were assessed and chosen based on criteria including the ability to overcome challenges, how the project contributed to the industry and community, design quality, safety, and construction. 145 projects were evaluated with 30 selected for Best Projects. 36 projects were selected for Awards of Merit.
