CAMPBELLSTOWN, Ohio – In a release from Norfolk Southern, the Class 1 announced it has completed a siding extension project.

Since 2017, Norfolk Southern has been building “longer, crossing-free sections of the railroad” as part of a siding extension project between Muncie and Cincinnati. As part of Norfolk Southern’s $1 billion annual infrastructure investment, this extension project will allow trains to “clear the main line while others pass” in areas of high-density single-track segments. The New Castle District can see up to 25 trains a day, and the siding upgrade extends it to 15,000 feet, thereby “improving fluidity on the company’s network” by allowing trains to pass.

Norfolk Southern’s Vice President of Engineering, Ed Boyle, underscored the project and how it “represents Norfolk Southern’s commitment to improving safety, service, and efficiency . . . The extension enables us to better serve our customers and support businesses in the area and beyond. Importantly, it also eliminates the chances of a blocked crossing in the community, which creates a safer and more accessible environment for residents.”

Indeed, the surrounding community is said to benefit from the “closure of three crossings in Preble County – Conley Road and Daily Road.” Additionally, Norfolk Southern will help to upgrade Toby Road. Once those upgrades are finished, the Oxford-Gettysburg crossing will close late next year.

Recently, Norfolk Southern finished similar projects in Montpelier, Indiana and Sidney, Indiana.
