Norfolk Southern experienced a derailment last night on its mainline that heads west from Atlanta, then splits at Austell, Ga., with one line going north to Chattanooga and the other going west to Birmingham. The accident occurred near Parrott Avenue, which is not far from the Chattahoochee River bridge.

In a media statement, Norfolk Southern said:

“At approximately 8pm last evening a Norfolk Southern train derailed near Parrot Avenue. One locomotive and 6 rail cars were involved. A minor diesel leak was detected from the derailed locomotive and it has been addressed by Norfolk Southern personnel and environmental contractors.

“No waterways were impacted.

“Crews worked overnight to re-rail the equipment and repair track damage. Train traffic through the area was restored just before 4am this morning.

“The cause is under investigation.”

The Atlanta Fire Department (AFD) reported that there was a small fire resulting from the derailment, and one of the crew members was taken to the hospital. Another news outlet reported later that the employee is expected to be ok.

AFD also reported that some electric powerlines had been pulled down by the accident.

RT&S will monitor the story publish any updates of significance.
