Train carrying ammunition, chemicals derails in Nevada

Military officials in Nevada are breathing a sigh of relief after a train derailment near Wells, Nev., on June 19.
The 22-car Union Pacific train went off the rails, causing I-80 to close in both directions for almost an hour. However, it could have been much worse, as the train was carrying sodium nitrate, hand grenades, bombs, fuel and other chemicals. Vegetable oil spilled out of the derailed cars, forcing the road closure.

A Union Pacific spokesperson also said some diesel fuel leaked, but nothing hazardous was released. No injuries were reported following the derailment and Union Pacific said the incident is under investigation.
Details of the train’s destination were unknown at the time of the crash, but the Reno Gazette-Journal was reporting that the munitions were being transported to the Hawthorne Army Depot in western Nebraska.
Lt. Kevin McKinney with the Elko County Sheriff’s Office said all of the lethal cargo was located in the back of the train, away from the derailed section.
