SAN DIEGO - Civic Communities awarded Balfour Beatty $9 million to go toward the next phase of a grade crossing project.
San Diego’s Park Boulevard at-Grade Crossing project is located near Petco Park and within the BNSF right-of-way, San Diego and Imperial Valley Railroad (SDIV), and the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS). The grade crossing will provide a roadway that connects Harbor Drive to Park Boulevard.
The park is part of a larger $27 million investment performed by Balfour Beatty. According to the release, Balfour Beatty will “execute demolition activities to remove existing tracks and overhead catenary systems (OCS) equipment.” Additionally, crews will dispose of ballast as well as provide “excavation and soil monitoring services.” Balfour Beatty will also construct new tracks, install OCS improvements and signal infrastructure.
The work is part of two packages of the project. Balfour Beatty says the final package includes constructing “new roadways, irrigation, landscape, grade crossing protection equipment and traffic signal improvements.” During this phase, the crossing and the signaling systems will be tested. Construction will begin in fall 2024 with a scheduled completion date in summer 2025.
Balfour Beatty operations manager in California Will Pfeffer said, “Balfour Beatty will leverage our industry leading rail expertise as well as our self-performance capabilities in the installation of specialty crossing and signaling systems, OCS modifications, and construction of track material to deliver the next package of the Park Boulevard at-Grade Crossing project. . . Our team will work with our client and industry partners in providing the essential infrastructure and systems to improve safety and transportation for travelers crossing over Harbor Drive to the Petco Park area.”
