SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The Illinois Commerce Commission, or ICC, has approved a highway-rail safety project in Alexander County.

The Illinois Commerce Commission, or ICC, has approved a highway-rail safety project in Alexander County. The Stipulated Agreement 2282 will require gate installations, new automatic flashing light signals, and approach grade improvements at the Clear Creek Levee Road highway-rail grade crossing.

The total cost for the gates and warning devices are $378,451, and ICC recommends that the Grade Crossing Protection Fund pay 95% of the costs. Union Pacific will be responsible for the remaining 5% and any future maintenance costs.

ICC Commissioner Michael T. Carrigan stated in the release that “Illinois is home to more than 7,000 miles of railroad track, which means our state is responsible for helping to ensure the safety of everyone who lives near and travels along these railroads. Projects like the one in Alexander County are an essential investment in keeping Illinois railways safe for all who use them.”
