SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) has approved the installation of automatic warning devices at a grade crossing near Solon Mills in McHenry County.
After rail safety staff evaluated the crossing, the project was approved. The total cost to design and install the automated warning devices is $417,431. The Grade Crossing Protection Fund (GCPF) is recommended to pay 95% of the cost, or up to $396,559. Wisconsin & Southern Railroad Company is responsible for the remaining 5% as well as any future maintenance costs associated with the crossing.
ICC Commissioner Michael T. Carrigan said, “Keeping Illinois’ rail infrastructure safe is a top priority for the ICC. The Grade Crossing Protection Fund allows the Commission to help local governments and railroad companies across Illinois make important safety improvements to their rail crossings.”
