CHICAGO - The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) approved more than $115,000 in funds from the Grade Crossing Protection Fund (GCPF). These funds will go toward improving public safety and deterring pedestrians trespassing on Metra tracks.
Located near Fenton High School, the project will construct more than 1,700 feet of fencing to redirect pedestrians toward the Busse Road/Kingery Expressway crossing. This work will take place within six months of the order from the ICC.
The ICC says it encourages safety among Illinoisians through “‘The Three E’s’ of railroad safety: Education through Operation Lifesaver Illinois; Enforcement of existing rail safety laws; and the Engineering necessary to make crossings as operationally safe as possible.”
ICC Commissioner Michael T. Carrigan said, “Trespassing on train tracks isn’t just illegal, it’s dangerous. Dozens of Illinoisans are injured or killed each year while trespassing. . . The ICC is committed to putting the state’s GCPF dollars to work to help reduce these incidents and improve Illinois’ rail safety infrastructure.”
