The Illinois Commerce Commission has granted approval for installation of new automatic warning devices at the N. Chestnut Lane highway-rail grade crossing of the Norfolk Southern track located in the City of Mt. Vernon, Jefferson County.

The total estimated cost to
install flashing light signals and gates with a bell, controlled by constant
warning time circuitry, is $222,330. The Grade Crossing Protection Fund will
pay 85 percent of the signal installation costs, not to exceed $188,981. The
City will pay 10 percent of the signal installation costs, and Norfolk Southern
will pay all remaining installation costs, as well as all future operating and
maintenance costs related to the new automatic warning devices.
