Newburgh-Beacon Ferry resumes operations

The Newburgh-Beacon Ferry is resuming normal operations March 10, 2010. Ferry service was suspended January 4 due to heavy icing in the Hudson River. Ice floes subsequently damaged the floating dock in Newburgh, N.Y. All repairs have now been completed.

During the outage,
Metro-North established a bus shuttle service to connect the Newburgh dock and
the Beacon, N.Y., train station to serve West of Hudson customers who take the
train to work in New York City.

"After one of the
most difficult winters in recent memory, complete with crushing ice floes and
two months of bus service in lieu of a boat, we are pleased that service is now
resuming for our Newburgh-Beacon Ferry customers," said Metro-North
President Howard Permut. "We hope customers return swiftly to this
much-favored means of commuting."

It was the longest outage
since the ferry service began in 2005. New York Waterway provides ferry service
contract to Metro-North. The boat, The West New York, makes six trips to Beacon
in the morning and eight from Beacon to Newburgh in the evening. Before this disruption,
the service was providing 400 rides a day and with advent of spring, the
railroad is eager for those customers to return.
