ATLANTA –– While Tropical Storm Chantal did not develop into a hurricane, Norfolk Southern was significantly impacted by the storm, but CSX suffered no damage.
Norfolk Southern announced this week in a Service Advisory that it is “actively managing the impacts of Tropical Storm Chantal, which made landfall on July 6 year Litchfield Beach, S.C.” While the tropical was later deemed a tropical depression, it made its way through North Carolina and Virginia. Norfolk Southern’s main line in North Carolina between Greensboro and Raleigh was washed out in several places and “service has been suspended since July 6 to to heavy rainfall, flooding, and washouts. Access to the area has been hindered by the closure of Interstate 40 in both directions at Mebane, N.C., along with several road closures. Service on the CF Branch Line (Out of Greensboro, N.C.) remains halted due to washouts.”
NS says that it expects to restore service on both lines on Wednesday, July 9, at 12:00, but only if further engineering investigations do not reveal additional problems.
Several news outlets have been told by CSX that there has been no significant impact to its lines by the storm.
