RailWorks reports data breach

RailWorks, a company specializing in rail transit and track, suffered a ransomware attack and data breach on January 27, 2020, according to a report in the computer journal, BleepingComputer, an information security and technology news publication.

According to the report, the data breach exposed “personally identifiable” information about independent rail contractors, and RailWorks employees and families (both current and former). RailWorks said that the type of information exposed included names and addresses, numbers from drivers’ licenses and government-issued IDs, birthdays, hire, termination and retirement dates, along with Social Security numbers.

RailWorks is taking measures to protect those who could be impacted by the data breach. “While we have no indication that any of your personal information has been misused, we are taking precautionary measures to help you protect your financial security and help to alleviate any concerns you may have,” the company said.  They added “We are committed to helping those who may have been impacted by this unfortunate situation. That’s why we are providing you with access to free credit monitoring for twelve (12) months through Identity Guard Total.”
