Sinkhole Causes CSX Train to Derail
Written by Jennifer McLawhorn, Managing EditorWHITEMARSH TOWNSHIP, Pa. - A CSX train derailed on a Norfolk Southern Line due to a sinkhole opening.
A sinkhole beneath a Norfolk Southern line opened and caused a CSX-operated train to derail. According to NBC Philadelphia, Norfolk Southern says it hopes to get this track line open “within the next day or two.”
In a press release, CSX said one of its trains derailed at around 4:50 AM on July 17th due to a weather-related incident. The train was carrying 40 cars and 16 of them derailed “near the intersection of Joshua and FLourtown Road in Whitemarsh Township, PA.”
Although one of the cars was “transporting hazardous material”, there were no hazardous leaks. In a statement, Chief Chris Schwartz of the Barren Hill Fire Department said, “One train car containing plastic pellets did break open and spilled next to the railway. These pellets were not hazardous.”
Nearby residents were forced to evacuate, but there were no injuries to the train crew.
