Ontario’s Greater Golden Horseshoe will be saddled up for more passenger rail service in the future.

The Ontario government is moving forward with work that will help create two-way, all-day service to the region.

There will be 200 km of new rail track installed and 600 km of track will be electrified. An electric fleet of trains, which could reach up to 140 kph, will be added to the mix. Other work will include upgrades to control systems and expanded tracks and structures along rail corridors. The project is part of the GO expansion program.

Metrolinx and ONexpress Transportation Partners will work together on a development phase that will last 24 months.

Construction could begin in 2023 and service expansion could happen as early as 2025.

Stan Cho, MPP and associate minister of transportation, said transforming the GO rail network and delivering two-way, all-day service will be a game changer for the people of the Greater Golden Horseshoe.
