SFMTA has been working on the railroad.

The first of two segments of SMTA’s L Taraval Improvement Project began in September 2019, and has just been completed on schedule and within budget.

The infrastructure upgrades will provide better service for those who ride the line between Sunset Boulevard and the San Francisco Zoo.

The accomplishments completed in Segment A of the project include:

  • Rail track and overhead line replacement
  • Water and sewer line replacement
  • Surface repaving
  • Curb ramp upgrades
  • Concrete boarding islands and pedestrian bulbs
  • Traffic signals
  • New trees and landscaping

Altogether, these improvements have increased accessibility and improved transit reliability, enhanced the safety of pedestrian crossings, rehabilitating water and sewer infrastructure, and freshening the surrounding landscape.

The next phase of the project, Segment B, will bring the same improvements from Sunset Boulevard to West Portal. This phase is scheduled to begin in 2022 and wrap up at the end of 2024.

If you’d like to follow the progress of the project, please visit the project webpage and sign up for updates.
