Maryland officials have rejected a proposal to build a new rail tunnel underneath the city of Baltimore.

The Valley Link light-rail system in California is on course to receive $20 million in federal funding.

The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee has included the money in the Surface Transportation Reauthorization Act of 2021.

U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell requested the funding, and he said connecting BART to Altamont Corridor Express has been one of his priorities since he became a federal lawmaker eight years ago.

The Valley Link would create seven new light-rail stations along a 42-mile route between the eastern Dublin-Pleasanton BART station and the Altamont Corridor Express North Lathrop station.

The project’s design phase is about 15% complete and Michael Tree, executive director of the Tri-Valley/San Joaquin Regional Rail Authority, said the $20 million will be used to transform the Valley Link rail line into a “national model of sustainability with new and emerging zero emission technologies.”

The Valley Link light-rail system is expected to be in service by 2030, and will provide 74 daily round trips carrying 33,000 riders by 2040.
