The Gilbert Road Light Rail Extension project in Mesa, Ariz., has received the Associated General Contractors of America’s Construction Risk Partners Build America Merit Award for best new highway and transportation project.
The project, executed by joint venture Stacy and Witbeck/Sundt, involved a light rail system running through a roadway roundabout, which is only the second time this has been done in the U.S. Other highlights of the project are: 4 miles of embedded track, two new stations, an overhead catenary system, and traction power substations. The line extended the existing light rail line from Mesa to Gilbert Road.
The Stacy and Witbeck/Sundt joint venture worked with the community and business owners to come up with the best solutions. The roundabout construction called for a 17-day closure that affected school bus routes. The contractor performed work during school holidays to reduce the impact. The line was open on May 18 of last year.
The Construction Risk Partners Build America Awards highlight the nation’s most significant construction projects. A panel of judges, representing all areas of construction, evaluated a number of submissions this year, which included assessing each project’s complexity, use of innovative construction techniques and client satisfaction.
