The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has published a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) in the Federal Register for $46.3 million in Positive Train Control (PTC) System Grants.

The funding is the balance of the $250 million in PTC Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) Program funds. The funds were originally announced in May with more than $200 million awarded 28 projects in August. Applications for this solicitation are due by 5:00 p.m. on Oct. 12.

“This expedited solicitation will provide commuter and intercity railroads an additional opportunity to request grant funds for positive train control,” said FRA Administrator Ronald L. Batory. “By reissuing these funds, FRA is showing our continued commitment to work with railroads and suppliers in fully implementing PTC.”

The grants will fund the deployment of PTC systems technology for intercity passenger rail transportation, freight rail transportation and/or commuter rail passenger transportation. Eligible projects include: back office systems; wayside, communications and onboard hardware equipment; software; equipment installation; spectrum; any component, testing and training for the implementation of PTC Systems and interoperability.
