Bridge Collapse Shuts Down Port of Baltimore — From Our Colleagues at Railway Age

BALTIMORE – The tragic early morning collapse of the I-695 Francis Scott Key Bridge, which spans the Patapsco River, following a bridge strike by a container ship weighing 95,000 gross tons, has brought the Port of Baltimore, an important trade hub, to a halt. The Port of Baltimore has suspended all vessel traffic into and out of the port until further notice. The accident is a serious blow to the port operations of both CSX and Norfolk Southern, particularly for intermodal container, automotive and coal traffic.

Skanska-Fay JV Selected for Howard Street Tunnel Clearance Project

BALTIMORE – A joint venture (JV) between Skanska and Fay, S&B USA Construction, has been selected for the $293 million Howard Street Tunnel Clearance Program, commonly known as the Howard Street Tunnel Project, which includes modernizing the historic 125-year-old Howard Street Tunnel in Baltimore, Md., along CSX’s I-95 rail corridor.

VPRA Awarded $729MM for TRV Initiative Projects

RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA) announced it was awarded a grant totaling $729 million from the FRA via the Federal-State Partnership for Intercity Passenger Rail Program (FSP-National).

CSX: Failed Wheel Bearing Behind Kentucky Derailment

ROCKCASTLE COUNTY, Ky. – An investigation has determined that a failed railcar wheel bearing caused the Nov. 22 CSX train derailment just north of Livingston, Ky., the Class I railroad reported Nov. 26. Sixteen cars, including two molten sulphur cars that breached and caught fire, were involved.
