Maryland officials have rejected a proposal to build a new rail tunnel underneath the city of Baltimore.

Progress continues on the Mayan Train project in Mexico as the first shipment of ballast arrived over the weekend.

Crews received over 7,300 tons of ballast material from Veracruz, and in total the project will need over 4.6 million cubic meters for the seven sections of the route.

When complete, the Mayan Train will be a 948-mile passenger line along the Yucatan Peninsula, connecting Palenque in Chiapas and Cancun, Quintana Roo.

Updates of the project are the following:

  • In section 1 preliminary work for the Boca del Cerro bridge has been advanced with crews taking advantage of materials extracted by two excavators, which was used in other areas of work;
  • In section 2 stripping and earthwork continues;
  • In section 3 the construction of vehicular crossings continues. Activities include casting and formwork of the trestle abutment wall and material hauling for the shaping of the embankment; and
  • In section 4, construction of the retaining walls for the Kantunil-Cancun highway is ongoing. Earthwork also continues.
