FORT WORTH, Texas – The first bridge in BNSF’s double track project has opened to freight and passenger trains in North Texas.

BusinessWire announced that the first train has crossed BNSF’s new Trinity River bridge. The new bridge is open to both freight and passenger trains and is part of BNSF’s double track project located in Texas. The project includes two bridges that cross over the Trinity River with the second to be completed early next year. According to the news release, “the second track will be built after the team demolishes a 126-year-old steel bridge.”

Weighing more than 5,500 tons, the bridge was built with steel spans and close to 2,000 tons of concrete and measures more than 1,300 feet long. The VP of Service Design for BNSF, Jon Gabriel, stated BNSF’s excitement over the double track project and how “these new bridges have been designed to meet the future rail needs of our region and enhance service for our customers.”

Gabriel went on to commend the efforts of The Tarrant Regional Water District, which coordinated the project whilst also keeping the river accessible for pedestrians because it is “committed to ensuring our infrastructure improvements also consider the needs of our community.” Their efforts regarding design and construction were “appreciated” and BNSF is “looking forward to this new bridge supporting greater supply chain efficiency.”
