The grade crossing on Highway L in Kenosha County, Wis., is in poor condition and needs to be fixed.

Union Pacific is being ordered to tend to a grade crossing in Somers, Wis. The Class 1 railroad company needs to rebuild the area over Highway L.

Kenosha County filed a complaint with the Wisconsin Office of the Commission of Railroads on Sept. 10 that Union Pacific was failing to maintain the crossing. The Commission agreed, and the Class 1 will have until Sept. 1, 2021, to make the repairs.

It is the eastern-most rail crossing on Highway L, located about halfway between Highway 31 and Highway EA. The grade crossing was cited for loose concrete panels between the tracks and timber that was in poor condition on the approaches. There also is a noticeable difference in the grade between the rails and the road surface.

“The county’s evidence clearly and convincingly demonstrates that the crossing is in very poor condition for highway travel,” the commission said in a statement.

Union Pacific runs seven freight trains through the area daily, reaching speeds up to 50 mph. The crossing also handles about 3,700 vehicles a day.

Union Pacific says it will make the necessary repairs.
