MARTINEZ, Calif. – At several Bay Area stations, Amtrak has completed accessibility upgrades, ensuring a better and more comfortable experience for customers.

The Martinez, Hayward, Fremont, and Oakland-Coliseum stations received a total $20.8 million in upgrades. These come as part of Amtrak’s larger investment in station upgrades across the country, totaling more than $870 million.

Martinez Station

$8.5 million was invested in accessibility upgrades at Martinez Station. This station serves the Capitol Corridor, Amtrak San Joaquins, Coast Starlight, and California Zephyr. Crews resurfaced the platform and added tactile warning surfaces along the edge for better navigation. Inside the station, crews renovated the restrooms and the ticket counter. In addition, the station has a path that travels from the bus drop off to the station and onto the platform.

Hayward Station

$5.6 million was invested in Hayward Station. Now, the station has a new platform with more space and a crossing to connect said platforms. Crews also repaired LED light fixtures and added new signage.

Fremont Station

$4.2 million in investments went toward Fremont Station. These improvements include a new platform with space on the station-side so Amtrak’s customers have access in both directions. Similar to Hayward Station, this station also received new LED light fixtures and signage.

Oakland-Coliseum Station

$2.5 million in investments went toward improving the Oakland-Coliseum Station. Crews resurfaced a platform with tactile warnings for better navigation for passengers. In ensuring a better passenger experience, crews added signage, trash receptacles, and pedestrian pathways.

Amtrak Vice President of Accessibility Dr. David Handera said, “We’re delivering a new era of rail while bringing greater accessibility to stations nationwide. . . As we prioritize station accessibility throughout Amtrak, we are thrilled that these Bay Area stations can provide a welcoming and comfortable experience for all customers.”

“As a senior member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I was proud to be an original cosponsor of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021,” said California Congressman John Garamendi (D). “The Biden Administration and congressional Democrats have made a generational investment to create good-paying union jobs, build more resilient infrastructure that will address the climate crisis, and modernizing our crumbling infrastructure with American materials and workers. I am thrilled that these funds have improved the Martinez Amtrak station for all residents of California’s 8th Congressional District.”
