With an anticipated completion date in the fall of 2025, work is underway for a new $65 million train station project in Coatesville, Pennsylvania.

Design, station and streetscape construction, as well as work to support Amtrak service, are all part of the planned work at Fleetwood Street, just east of the existing station building, according to a local news report

Foundation work for the south platform area is currently underway and will continue until early spring of 2023, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said in a recent release.

The next phase will begin with the construction of platforms, elevators, and stair towers on the south side.

“When city residents see actual construction it energizes them and makes them more hopeful that we are stepping into the 21st Century like other cities and municipalities,” said Coatesville City Manager James Logan.

Following the planned work, Coatesville-area riders will be better able to commute to nearby communities on existing Amtrak and restored SEPTA train lines, Logan said.

The current station building has been closed for more than 25 years, officials said. The building is owned by Amtrak and leased to the City of Coatesville.

The original site lies on a curve in the track, preventing the ability to install ADA-accessible platforms and forcing a change in the station’s placement, officials said.

The new station will have 530-foot-long high-level accessible platforms with canopies and seats, stair/elevator towers, an audio/visual public address system, security cameras, and bicycle racks. It will be located along Fleetwood Street between Third and Fourth Avenues.

Additional surface parking will be made available, as well as space for multimodal connections.

The work is being managed by PennDOT with assistance from Chester County, the City of Coatesville, and the Coatesville Redevelopment Authority. The Federal Transit Administration. is providing additional funding.

Crews first broke ground at the site in October of 2021.
