NEWARK - NJ Transit and Amtrak are moving forward with construction on the Sawtooth Bridges Replacement Project.
The project seeks to construct multiple bridge structures with four tracks in total and replace the existing 120-year-old bridge to improve operations, as reported by RT&S. The first bridge will be built to realign NJ Transit’s Morris & Essex Track 5 further north, leading to the construction of bridge #2. Bridge #2 will be built along the existing Sawtooth bridges for another two NEC tracks. Bridge #3 will replace the Sawtooth Bridge structures completely.
Now, a $133 million Federal-State Partnership grant will support critical improvements along the NEC, says NJ Transit. With the project’s initial construction moving forward, the announcement re-establishes NJ Transit’s and Amtrak’s “joint commitment to improving service.” Amtrak has applied for another $3 billion in federal funds for rail infrastructure upgrades. This includes funding for the Sawtooth Bridges Project.
