NEWARK - Skanska has signed a $87 million contract for the Dock Bridge rehabilitation project with Amtrak.
The Dock Bridge opened in 1935 and is a six-track, triple-span moveable lift bridge located along the Northeast Corridor. The bridge crosses the Passaic River between Newark and Harrison, New Jersey. PATH, Amtrak, and NJ Transit trains traverse the bridge everyday.
The Dock Bridge Rehabilitation Project is part of the Gateway Program and seeks to convert the bridge from a moveable to a fixed span bridge and removing existing mechanical and electrical systems, jacking bridge counterweights, installing permanent counterweight supports, and rehabbing concrete piers, says Skanska. In April 2025, RT&S reported that Amtrak and the FRA adopted a revised scope for a planned rehab of the bridge to save taxpayers $140 million.
On July 2, Skanska announced it had signed a contract for the project. The contract will be included in the US order bookings for the second quarter of 2026, according to the release.
