Norfolk Southern Improves Infrastructure in Ohio

CAMPBELLSTOWN, Ohio - Norfolk Southern removed double track and extended siding east to 15,000 feet in Ohio.

In a press release from Norfolk Southern, the Class I outlines its infrastructure investment in Campbellstown, Ohio. In working with stakeholders Ohio Rail Development Commission (ORDC) and Treble County Sheriff Mike Simpson, NS worked on a project that “involved extending the siding east to 15,000 feet while shortening the western end and removing the double track through Campbellstown.” This adjustment should reduce congestion in its elimination of three public crossings.

NS announced a new Director Public Engagement role back in September 2022. This role, filled by Will Miller, will help marshal resources “to improve railroad infrastructure across Norfolk Southern’s network and engagement with local leaders and their citizens.”

Miller said, “This project was a true team effort and underscores our ongoing commitment to enhancing efficiency, promoting safety, and collaborating with local communities across our network. . . Partnerships like this are essential for the sustainable development of rail infrastructure, creating a positive impact on both our operations and our communities.” NS contributed funding to the county that was partly matched by ORDC. These funds went toward closing public crossings and completing the project.

ORDC Executive Director Matt Dietrich said, “We are always looking for ways to leverage the economic opportunities that rail service provides while minimizing the effects on the quality of life of those who live nearby. . . We believe we’ve been able to strike that balance with this project for Norfolk Southern.”
