Union Pacific plans to enhance Oregon's transportation infrastructure by investing $2 million to replace the line that runs through Penn Tunnel in Portland, Ore.

The project will begin Nov. 16 and is scheduled to be completed by Nov. 21. This critical infrastructure maintenance will be performed 24 hours a day during the time period to minimize the impact on the community and UP operations.

The project will replace the existing rail line inside the tunnel, which amounts to a little more than one mile of track. Existing track will be removed in 40-foot segments and new track will be installed. The project includes replacing 3,600 tons of ballast inside the tunnel to help maintain a stable roadbed. A UP team of 100 will be working at the project site.
