NS derailment cripples Amtrak weekend service on Northeast Corridor

A Norfolk Southern train derailment over the weekend had Amtrak cancelling trips.
The accident happened in Perryman, Md., on the Northeast Corridor around 2 a.m. on March 5. The Northeast Corridor is the busiest section of rail in the U.S.
About 20 cars derailed, spilling coal on about a mile of track. Norfolk Southern is continuing with its investigation. No one was hurt as a result of the accident.
However, Amtrak had to suspend train service between Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia for the remainder of the weekend. A modified scheduled was implemented for runs between New York and Philadelphia, where there was limited Acela Express service. Palmetto service between Savannah, Ga., and New York also was scratched until Monday.
