PHOENIX, Ariz. Union Pacfic has opened a new intermodal terminal in Phoenix which will connect the Southwest with international ports in Southern California. The terminal opened on Feb. 1.

In a press release, UP said that “This location introduces a first of its kind intermodal service between the Los Angeles Basin and Phoenix. It sources international shipping containers from the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, as well as Union Pacific’s ICTF Intermodal Terminal.

“The new service offers a sustainable, efficient rail option that reduces emissions and removes trucks from California and Arizona’s already congested highways. Moving freight by train instead of truck in the United States reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 75%.” The new facility is known as a “pop up,” as it sits within an existing UP yard in downtown Phoenix.

Kenny Rocker, UP’s Executive Vice President – Marketing and Sales, said “The opening of Union Pacific’s new Phoenix facility is an exciting opportunity that provides an unmatched international intermodal option for our shippers to reach the growing market in Arizona and surrounding areas. This terminal demonstrates oiur ability to improve the utilization of an existing asset to generate growth and provide a faster speed to market for our customers.”
