LOS ANGELES – “Women Breaking Ground”, a website dedicated to giving women information about joining an apprenticeship readiness training program and other resources.

Los Angeles Metro announced it is launching a website dedicated to supporting women seeking careers in construction. The Project labor Agreement/Construction Careers Policy (PLA/CCP) “ensures that Metro strives to diversify the workforce on construction projects.” It works to improve access to career opportunities for disadvantaged populations by encouraging “employment opportunities and hands-on training in the construction trades” throughout Los Angeles County.

According to the report, LA Metro is the first agency in the country to adopt a PLA/CCP that has an emphasis on hiring individuals who are in apprenticeship programs, considered economically disadvantaged, and excluded from construction project opportunities previously.

The PLA/CCP for La Metro “adheres to Federal Executive Order 11246” and sets a 6.9% hiring goal for female workers. The national average for women in construction is less than 3%, according to LA Metro. Last year, it created a “Joint Awareness Campaign” in partnership with the Los Angeles/Orange County Building Trades Council to raise awareness about opportunities in construction for women.

For Women’s History Month during March, the Joint Awareness Campaign has launched “Women Breaking Ground”, a website that “gives women that are interested in a career in construction an avenue for learning more about how to join an apprenticeship readiness training program and get connected to resources.” The website will have testimonials of women who have worked in trades to give a summary of their experience. In addition, the website will function as a tool for those women who are already in a trade to be able to connect to unions, contractors, and other resources.
