The National Railroad Construction & Maintenance Association (NRC) is offering more scholarships this year than any other year.

The association makes scholarships available every year in order to assist children or grandchildren of employees of NRC member companies. This year, the NRC has raised the total amount of scholarship funds from $21,000 to $33,000.

The scholarships will be awarded as follows: one first place award will be given at $12,000; two second place awards will be announced at $6,000 each; and three third place prizes will be awarded at $3,000 each. Candidates must apply by the application deadline on Aug. 30.

The NRC Scholarship Committee has the authority, and at its discretion, to award additional second and third place prizes if it sees fit, according to a statement from NRC President Matt Bell.

Students who are awarded scholarship funds will receive the funds directly at the beginning of the next term of study. Students must be enrolled and in attendance for a full academic year following receipt of the award.

“As another great benefit to the families of our member companies, the NRC is pleased to give back to the railroad contracting community by offering our annual Scholarship program again this year,” said NRC Board Member & Scholarship Chairman Joe Daloisio. “One change that we are very excited about is, we are able to provide an increased amount of scholarship awards this year.”

Daloisio also added that the association has seen a very competitive NRC scholarship program during the past couple of years.

“Last year, we saw a record of almost 40 applications, and we look forward to another year of highly qualified applicants,” he explained. “Thank you to all member companies in advance, for encouraging your kids to apply and take advantage of this great program.”

To be eligible for scholarship award consideration, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Applicants must be child or grandchild of a current NRC member company employee
  • Candidates must also be enrolled in school at the time of the application as a full-time college student at an accredited two-year college offering an associate’s degree or an accredited four-year college or university offering a bachelor’s degree, or as a recently graduated high school senior that is enrolled to start college this fall
  • Previous NRC Scholarship winners are eligible to apply for a scholarship if they still meet all of the eligibility requirements.
