WMATA’s Patel joins Stantec

Hitendra (Hiten) Patel, PE, former Deputy Chief of Construction and Design Engineering with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), has joined global design and engineering firm Stantec as a principal and program manager at the firm’s Transportation division in the Mid-Atlantic region, based in Laurel, Md.

Patel “will help manage and grow Stantec’s Transportation and Transit practices across the Mid-Atlantic, while also lending expertise in construction and systems engineering on many of Stantec’s large, complex transit projects throughout the U.S.,” the company said. “With more than 30 years’ transit experience, he brings extensive knowledge in managing challenging infrastructure construction and rehabilitation projects, as well as applying innovative approaches. During his decades at WMATA, he was instrumental in delivering improvements in safety, reliability, and customer service throughout the authority’s metro system.

“Among key projects, Patel managed the development and implementation of a comprehensive 20-year, $8 billion system infrastructure renewal program to enhance the safety and efficiency of WMATA’s aging system. He also launched WMATA’s weekend station shutdown plan and cultivated public acceptance of such major construction activities. Additionally, he developed, executed and managed numerous substantial line and station rehabilitation contracts to successfully maximize construction efficiencies, and effectively directed $300 million in annual capital program spending consecutively for six years.”

Patel holds a master of science in Construction Engineering and Management from the University of Maryland; a degree in Financial Business Management from Bhavan’s University in Mumbai, India; and a bachelor of engineering in Civil Engineering from Saurastra University in Gujarat, India. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Maryland and a Certified Construction Manager.

Stantec provides planning, engineering and infrastructure management services ranging from major expressway and rural roadway projects to bridge rehabilitation, transit systems and airport design. Stantec serves as the lead engineer on the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) expansion plan.
