All of the construction activities in the city of Boston have been suspended in an attempt to slow the spreading of the coronavirus.

The city of Boston is shutting down construction activity as fears about the spread of the coronavirus continue and officials attempt to flatten the infected rate.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh made the announcement on March 17. The suspension of projects will leave tens of thousands of workers out of a job. Walsh will re-evaluate the decision to shut down construction in two weeks, and is advising employers to lay off workers instead of fire them so unemployment benefits can be received.

Boston has been experiencing a spike in building activity, but after the number of coronavirus cases increased to 33 officials decided to put a halt to it all.

Emergency street and utility work are the only activities that will be allowed.

Contractors, construction companies and project owners have until March 23 to secure sites. Some may have to rely on a small crew to monitor jobsites for the next 14 days.

Right now it is unclear how many rail projects will be affected. RT&S will provide updates if and when new information becomes available.
