Sometimes when you are moving down the street you become the Grand Marshal of the unexpected. On Monday, a Union Pacific train derailed in downtown Rockford, Ill., and the Class 1 railroad has determined it was due to faulty pavement.

The tracks are on Madison Street and the railroad shares the route with motorists. The Union Pacific train was traveling just a few miles per hour when it hit a portion of raised pavement and derailed. The locomotive remained upright, but was stuck for several hours before crews could get it back on the tracks. The derailment caused further damage to the pavement.

Work on the road was being planned for 2021, and Union Pacific will continue to work with the city of Rockford on the $2 million project. In the meantime, Union Pacific is expected to fix the damage caused by the derailment.
