CHARLESTON, W. Va. – Senator Joe Manchin has announced that the DOT’s Railroad Crossing Elimination Program has given $576,000 to study grade crossings as part of rail safety.

From Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, funding has been made available to improve rail safety in West Virginia. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law created the Railroad Crossing Elimination Program to fund other rail safety measures, such as the construction of overpasses, underpasses, installations of warning devices at crossings, and planning and design elements among others.

Totaling $576,000, the funds are broken down into two separate awards. First, $480,000 is to the West Virginia Department of Transportation for the West Virginia Crossing Safety Action Plan Implementation. The remaining $96,000 is to the City of Parkersburg for “studying the potential elimination of existing at-grade rail crossing on 19th street”.

Senator Manchin commented, “To keep West Virginia moving, we need to ensure we have a safe and strong railway system . . . This funding will enhance rail crossings in the Mountain State to reduce congestion, strengthen our supply chains, and save lives. I look forward to seeing the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’scontinued lasting impact on West Virginia communities. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue advocating for resources that keep West Virginians and the goods that travel along our railways safe.”
