TriMet’s ongoing efforts to rejuvenate and improve the MAX system in the Portland, Ore., area will continue in September and require closures of I-84 and a small section of the MAX Blue Line.

The closure of I-84 is necessary so crews can continue building a new light rail bridge over the freeway.

I-84 will be closed in both directions near the I-205 interchange from 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, to 4 a.m. Monday, Sept. 26. The Northeast 102nd Avenue on-ramp to I-84 west and the I-84 east Exit 7 Halsey/99nd Avenue off ramp also will be closed.

As TriMet’s A Better Red project continues to make progress in the Gateway area, crews will be setting girders for a new MAX bridge near the junction of I-84 and I-205 during the weekend closure.

During the MAX Blue Line Sept. 24-25 disruption, crews will revitalize track and a rail crossing at Northeast 102nd Avenue and East Burnside Street.

Construction activities currently in progress include:

  • Building a new walkway and break facility for MAX operators at Fair Complex/Hillsboro Airport MAX Station;
  • Constructing a new track crossing, Red Line station platform, multi-use path and two new bridges just north of the Gateway Transit Center; and
  • Multi-phase construction along Air Cargo Road, near Portland International Airport, to reposition the roadway.
