Five railroad bridges, rail will be upgraded in Wisconsin

Maryland officials have rejected a proposal to build a new rail tunnel underneath the city of Baltimore.
A Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant has been awarded to the Wisconsin DOT to help fund a Rock County project to repair and replace railroad bridge components.
The RAISE Discretionary Grant program invests in road, rail, transit, and port projects that promise to achieve national objectives. Previously known as the Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) and Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) Discretionary Grants, Congress has dedicated nearly $8.9 billion for 12 rounds of national infrastructure investments to fund projects that have a significant local or regional impact.
The funding for the Wisconsin DOT will go toward the Janesville Bridges and Track Rehabilitation project in Rock County. This project will increase the lifespan and capacity of five critical railroad bridges, which directly connect seven Wisconsin counties and their employers to the Chicago terminal and beyond. In addition, rail that currently handles 263,000 lb of carload weight will be replaced with new rail that will tolerate 286,000 lb. The total length of track that will be switched out is 0.6 miles. The RAISE grant will cover $6.7 million, which is 60% of the total cost of the project. The remaining funds will come from the Wisconsin DOT, Wisconsin & Southern Railroad, and the Wisconsin River Rail Transit Commission.
