Earthmoving equipment is on the scene of a mega-industrial site in Gainesville, Fla. Crews are building railroad tracks that will include a spur that will feed into a future industrial park.

As part of phase one construction, tracks will be constructed across Highway 90 and will take six months to complete. Dozers, wheel loaders, motor graders and skid-steer loaders are prepping the site for the railroad. Rail has already arrived on the scene.

According to Columbia County Economic Director Glenn Hunter, the spur will direct railroad traffic off to the side of the main line track.

The 26-acre industrial site is being backed by state grants to improve Columbia County’s rural economy. Hunter says the site is one of the few sites certified by the state of Florida where the state is working with small rural counties in north Florida.

The purpose is to bring industry and jobs to rural area. This project and industrial park will put thousands to work, and Hunter is already seeing interest from manufacturers, which could occupy the industrial park in the near future.
