Officials were on hand in Toronto, Canada, to sound the horns and mark the beginning of another subway project.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced the start of the 15.6-km Ontario Line, which will have 15 subway stations, will run through the heart of downtown Toronto, and take some stress off of Toronto Transit Commission’s Line 1. Toronto Mayor John Tory and Ontario Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney also were on hand for the announcement.

Calling it a game changer, Ford said the Ontario Line would expand the existing TTC subway system significantly. The Ontario Line will start near Ontario Place south of Exhibition Place and end at the Ontario Science Centre in North York. The route will link up with 40 other transit routes, including GO train lines, TTC subway and streetcar stations, and the Eglinton Crosstown, which is currently under construction.

The Ontario Line is expected to be complete by 2030, with the first construction bids expected by late April.
