The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is trying to sort out the answers a day after a Brown Line train and a Purple Line train collided on the tracks. The accident happened near the Sedgwick Street station. Both trains were moving southbound.

Fourteen people were injured and taken to local hospitals, where they were treated and released. The CTA is now looking at all aspects of the system: railcars, signal system, tracks, and even video. Personnel also are being interviewed.

The CTA says this type of accident is “extremely rare.” The collision occurred at 9:15 a.m. on Sept. 24 and service resumed at 10:30 a.m. However, this is the second accident on a CTA line in less than four months. Back on June 6, a Green Line train partially derailed and service was interrupted for hours.

Passengers described the accident as one that was jarring enough that cell phones were dropped and standing passengers were knocked to the ground. It felt like a derailment, but both trains remained on the track.
