High-Speed Rail Board and LA Metro agree on funding to improve Los Angeles Union Station

CHSRA and LA Metro agree on funding for LAUPT improvements.

The California High-Speed Rail Authority (Authority) Board of Directors today approved a multi-million dollar project management and funding agreement between Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority (LA Metro) and the Authority to modernize the historic LA Union Station through the Link Union Station (Link US) project.

The following reactions were given after today’s board meeting in Sacramento:

“We applaud the California High Speed Rail Authority Board of Directors for their approval of this important funding agreement of $423.335 million for Metro’s Link Union Station Phase A project, a key funding milestone for the CAHSR bookend project here in Southern California,” said Metro Chief Executive Officer Stephanie N. Wiggins. “Metro remains committed to working closely with the CAHSR to bring more investments to improve this vital passenger rail corridor, accommodate for future high-speed rail, and promote economic development in the region.”

“Today’s board approval is another example of the amazing progress happening in the Southern California region,” said Southern California Regional Director LaDonna DiCamillo. “We are excited to partner with Metro to enable future high-speed rail service to Los Angeles Union Station.”

Past actions on the project include:

May 2016: The Authority executed a contract with LA Metro to fund a share of Link US project development costs.

March 2017: The Authority’s Board of Directors approved up to $18.7 million to help fund engineering and technical studies, and to environmentally clear a range of investments to help modernize and integrate high-speed rail at Link US.

September 2019: High-Speed Rail announced an agreement with LA Metro to work collaboratively to secure approval of $423 million in Proposition 1A funds towards the Link US project.

April 2020: The Authority Board approved a preliminary funding plan that detailed the release of the Proposition 1A funds that were appropriated by the California Legislature pursuant to Senate Bill (SB) 1029, which was signed into law in 2012.

California High-Speed Rail is under construction along 119 miles with more than 35 active job sites. To date, more than 7,500 construction jobs have been created since the start of construction.
