The Port Authority of Allegheny County in Pennsylvania is expecting to receive almost $2.6 million in damages from Norfolk Southern following the 2018 derailment where a train landed on light rail tracks at Station Square in Pittsburgh.

The Port Authority, which was seeking $3 million in damages, will most likely approve the settlement when it meets next week. Mike Cetra, the Port Authority’s chief legal officer, said discussions with Norfolk Southern revealed that some of the Port Authority’s line items were duplicated, which reduced the claim.

Following the derailment the Port Authority replaced around 1,600 ft of track, 4,000 ft of electrical lines and the support structure, a fiber-optic service for safety signals, a retaining wall and a sidewalk at Station Square. Rerouting service to another light rail line and providing shuttle buses for three weeks also had to be done.

The Norfolk Southern train derailed on Aug. 5 above Station Square. Rail cars fell down a hillside and what they were carrying dropped on Port Authority property.
