Contractor selected for retaining wall, abutment work on rail bridge project in Michigan

Work will begin on two railroad bridge in Jackson, Mich., in March.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will use Nicholson Construction for a railroad bridge replacement project in Jackson, Mich.

Prime contractor Anlaan will use Nicholson to install micropiles to support new bridge abutments. The subcontractor also will place permanent soil anchors for new earth retaining walls. The walls will raise the existing railroad grade. Nicholson is expected to have work completed by late 2022.

The $19.7 million project calls for the replacement of a pair of 100-year-old railroad bridges over Jackson and Mechanic Street in Jackson. MDOT owns the railroad corridor, which is a federally designated high-speed rail route that runs between Chicago and Detroit.

The prime contractor will use accelerated bridge construction methods to construct the new spans, and work also involves rebuilding the retaining walls and lifting railroad track, as well as building a pathway under the Mechanic Street railroad bridge.

The project is expected to begin in March.
